NIGHT SKY
Dusk transitions into night
We are awake within the laws of man
Yet sleep within the anarchy of dreams
The space between is where
Certainty inclines to the ambiguous
From solid to imagined
Prosaic becomes poetic
Secular spiritual
Ordinary magical
Rational madness
The forbidden is unleashed
And from the hunter emerges the hunted
We are nearer to death
But also to rebirth.
We seek the reassurance of the sun
As we dread the hours of darkness
But though in daylight we can point to the horizon
At night we can see further
Night Sky was, like The Prophet: Remix, a production with both professional and non-professional artists from Bankstown in Western Sydney. Individuals and groups were commissioned to respond to the central idea of night sky, dusk, the moon, transitions and migration – I wrote the above poem as a sort of provocation for them. They came back with poems, songs, music, comedy sketches, dance and stories. My job was to put them together into some sort of coherent show and include a few large set pieces with them all as an ensemble. We performed the show over three nights outside in the courtyard of Bankstown Arts Centre in November 2017.
